Honor Your Ancestor

Mission Statement

To educate and assist those people who are wanting to or already writing about their family research, history, and stories.

They meet on the 2nd Thursday of each month, in the McDermott Room on the 8th Floor, J. Erik Jonsson Dallas Public Library, 1515 Young Street, in downtown Dallas (across the street from Dallas City Hall),  from 6:30-8:30.

March 14 Assignment: Write about a place. It might be a place that has been significant in your own life or the life of an ancestor.
April 10 Using Roots Magic to Assist Writing Our Family Histories, Tresa Tatyrek
May 8 Assignment: "A Family Legend I Cannot Prove" The story Gradmas used to tell or the cousins whisper about--is it true? Do you have any evidence to back it up? What additional steps--if any-could you take to document the story?
June 12 Common Problems in Genealogical Writing - And Practical Advice on How to Avoid Them, Patricia Law Hatcher, FASG

August 14 "Capturing Memories in a 3-Ring Binder: A Collaborative Family Project" by John Wylie. Want to make sure all your children have copies of important photos? Can't afford to publish a real book? John offers ideas on preserving family memories.

October 9 Writing and Publishing Experiences of Kathleen Kent, author of The Heretic's Daughter. Kathleen is 10th generation descendant of Martha Carrier, one of the first women to be accused, tried, and hanged in Salem, MA.
November 13 Assignment:TO BE ANNOUNCED
December 11 "Interviewing for Oral History," Sharon Gayle. The holidays offer opportunities to interview family that normally is far away. Gather stories of life experiences, stories for research and preservation in the words of those who lived those experiences.
